About Imago Relationships Australia

What Is Imago Relationship Therapy?

Happy Couple in Therapy

The term "imago" refers to the unconscious image of love that individuals develop during childhood, influenced by their early relationships with caregivers. This image shapes adult partner selections and relationship dynamics.

Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a form of psychotherapy designed to help couples improve their relationships through better communication and understanding.

Here are the key points:

Imago Concept:

Family of women dealing with hardships and therapy

Understanding Triggers

Understanding Triggers: IRT emphasizes that partners often trigger each other's unresolved childhood issues. Recognizing these triggers allows couples to understand their emotional responses better.

Healing Past wounds

Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) encourages couples to explore and heal from past traumas and unmet needs. By addressing these issues together, partners can create a more stable and nurturing relationship.

Communication Skills

The therapy focuses on developing effective communication techniques, particularly the "Imago Dialogue." This structured process involves mirroring, validating, and empathizing, which fosters deeper understanding and connection.

Conscious Relationship

Imago Relationship Therapy promotes the idea of creating a "conscious relationship," where partners actively work towards growth, understanding, and emotional safety, rather than falling into reactive patterns.

Role of the Therapist

The therapist acts as a facilitator, guiding couples through processes of empathy and understanding rather than taking sides or providing direct solutions.

Transformation Potential

Imago Relationship Therapy aims for transformation, helping couples move from conflict to connection, ultimately improving both the individual's and the couple's overall well-being.

Focus on Growth

Focus on Growth: The therapy fosters personal and relational growth, encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their emotions and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

    Candy vR:

Diana Anderson is a master at helping people resolve issues that arise within relationships. I have brought my most significant relationships to her, when there have been what felt like insurmountable issues between us and have always found that after a session or two with her, those relationships are deepened by bringing each person safely into their true self. It is through helping each person to understand and empathize with the other that we can truly “stand in their shoes,” allowing our relationships to grow and be enriched. I truly recommend Diana’s work if you want to live in your truth and grow your ability to relate more deeply and authentically.

Diana helped us work through the feelings associated with the affair that happened in our relationship, and to explore how this happened. Our relationship is now much stronger and deeper as a result, and we are both grateful.
